Ground Screws for Decking

Ground screws can support timber or composite decking without relying on excavated concrete pads, provided the screw layout, beam spans and connections are designed as a complete base. They are particularly useful where terrain, access or retained landscaping makes conventional excavation awkward.

LAYOUT & SPACING

The decking frame determines where support is useful

Support positions normally follow the load-bearing beams rather than every decking board or joist. Timber sizes, joist spans, beam spans, edge conditions, stairs, balustrades and heavier point loads all affect the arrangement.

SLOPES & LEVEL CHANGES

Creating a level base above uneven ground

On a sloping site, ground screws can create support points at coordinated head levels while the shafts engage with the ground below. That can reduce the need to excavate the whole footprint to one level.

The visible projection, lateral stability, frame depth and final step heights still need to be resolved. Very steep or unstable ground may need a different approach or engineering input.

CONNECTION DETAIL

Head plates, beams and load transfer

The top connection is where the decking frame transfers its load into each screw. Head-plate type, beam position, fixing detail and corrosion exposure should be considered together rather than left until after installation.

Share the proposed framing plan if available. Where it is not yet designed, dimensions and expected use provide a better starting point than an assumed support count.

SITE PRACTICALITIES

Access, planting and existing surfaces

Decking is often proposed around existing planting, boundaries, patios or level changes. Each support position needs enough installation access, and underground services or substantial roots may require the layout to change.

These are practical starting points, not substitutes for project design or a site review.

How many screws does a deck need?

There is no reliable count based only on deck area. Beam layout, spans, loads, edges, stairs, ground and access all influence the number.

Can ground screws support raised decking?

Potentially, but visible height, bracing, lateral loads and the complete frame design become increasingly important as the deck rises.

Do you install for timber and composite decking?

The foundation can be considered for either, but the supporting frame and manufacturer requirements must be coordinated with the chosen deck system.
