Potential advantage

Ground screws can significantly reduce excavation compared with traditional concrete foundations and may provide a useful option where root disturbance needs to be minimised.

That potential advantage is not the same as a guarantee of no root damage. Screw positions and the installation route still need careful consideration.

Questions to resolve

  • Are there root protection areas or arboricultural requirements?
  • Can screw positions be coordinated around important roots and tree constraints?
  • Is there sufficient access for the selected installation equipment?
  • Are underground services, walls, boundaries or existing structures close to the layout?

Project coordination

Where trees are material to the project, the foundation layout may need to be coordinated with an arboriculturist, designer, engineer or planning requirement.

A low-excavation method still depends on a suitable ground response and a workable structural layout.

RESPONSIBLE USE

The presence of trees does not by itself establish suitability. Root condition, species, protection requirements, ground and structure all matter.
